Course Synopsis:
Overhead line structures and their components suffer stress due to electrical,
mechanical and environmental factors, which lead to defects and eventual failures.
Maintenance is not only about preventing failure, but also about limiting the
consequences of failures. The success of maintenance is measured in terms of
availability, reliability, safety, environmental responsibility and cost. A successful
and effective maintenance policy puts appropriate emphasis on each of these factors.
This course outlines general problems with respect to overhead line structures,
conductors, insulators and various hardware components. It also discusses line
inspection techniques, performance of typical maintenance materials, general corrosion
protection and environmental management practices.
